Room 4 have been working hard on developing our literacy circle skills this term. We have focused on Discussion Rules and also on all the reading strategies we know - inferring, visualizing, questioning to name a few.

One Moment in Time

Everyone has been writing amazing poems in our unit, using wonderful language features and descriptive vocabulary.  This learning can be seen in our writing about a moment in time.  Everyone is using their 5 senses as well to describe thoughts and feelings.

Here is Mia's writing about cross country which we ran last week -
            The Starting Line

My heart was pounding, sweat was dripping down my forehead, my throat suddenly had turned dry and my legs felt like lead.  My feet felt like they were sinking into the ground.
The tree’s were dancing in the wind.  I looked from left to right, there were so many other girls I had to try to get in front of.  My cheeks were flushed, my legs had turned into wobbly jelly.  I could hear the mob of deafening shouts of encouraging teachers, parents and other children.
The sun glare was enough to blind my eyes and it was beating the heat down on me!  I could see the uneven ground I was going to run on, then my nervousness started taking over.  I could taste the sour wind blowing around me and I was left wondering … can I do this?

Measurement

Room 4 has been learning a lot about Area and Perimeter so far this term.  They had another task to complete for Mrs Kaye.
We had 24 apple trees to plant in our garden.  How would we plant them in order to take up the least amount of ground from our play area?  What was the area?  Each group had 24 counters to help model the tree planting.  What do you think we discovered?

Is this array going to work?

We're on the right track.

Another planting plan.

More possible designs.

Wow, each design has the same Area!

Measurement

We have been investigating how we find the Perimeter and the Area of a space.  Mrs Kaye needed help building a dog pen for her sister's new puppy.  She had 40 metres of fence, each one a metre long.  In groups we had to build a pen that gave the puppy the largest area to run around in.  We used ice block sticks to help us - each stick = 1 metre.  Then we had to remember the formula for Perimeter to work out which shape was the largest.  It was so much fun!

This is a long run for the puppy!

How will we work out the perimeter?

Here is our working out.

Even Joy could fit in the pen!
