Re-telling the Main Idea

Room5 have been working hard on making their own books based on the main events from
The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch.
They have retold the main event from each day and sequenced the story together to form their own book.  Everyone worked really hard to include interesting words and to draw wonderful pictures.
Their books are amazing!  Want to come and read them?

We have been working hard on learning our addition basic facts this week, especially 'Friends of Ten'.
Great fun was had by all and lots of learning too, as we put our own addition flap books together.
Take a look!  Next week we will try subtraction!

Our Fun Learning so Far!

Room 5 have had an incredibly busy start to their Year 4 learning this term.

They have had fun writing descriptions, looking at ways to 'hook' our readers interest and how to choose interesting words when describing something - like a 'Gruncher' from Roald Dahl's The Minpins and also their 'Rocking School Shoes'!  Here is some of our writing -

It's hermit crab eyes are really high but it still can't see above all the smoke he blows.  All of his spikes are covered in blood from all the animals, humans, and Minpins he's killed!  It's dark as night stomach can squash 14 cows when it lies down.  The Gruncher's blue as the sea hooves can run up to 70km an hour.  By Jed.

What is your favourite pair of shoes?  My favourite pair are black and red and they have got a rubber sole.  They have got white lines down the sides.  My shoes are super bendy and they have got little holes down the sides too.  By Matthew.

We have gathered data, made bar graphs, looked at the mode, range and median and discussed what our graphs tell us.  In these pictures we had to count how many books we had in our desks and build our bar graph.

We started topic about Boulcott's past, particularly Boulcott Farm in 1846.  We did a 'gallery walk' where we looked at photo's and pictures of our past and came up with 'What I noticed...' and 'One question I have now...'

We thought about the things that make our hearts healthy for Valentine's Day, and came up with great ways to keep ourselves healthy.

The class has been super swimmers over the last two weeks.  Well done to all those who have tried really hard to improve, ka pai!

Superlative Speeches

Speaking confidently in front of an audience is a useful skill to have.  Last week Room 13 began to present their Topic speeches about a creature from Under the Sea.  The first person to volunteer was Cieran, who presented a well researched and entertaining speech on Jellyfish.  Watch his introduction above, it's been learnt in full and delivered enthusiastically!  Nearly everyone has presented their speeches now and are feeling really proud of themselves.  Tino pai!

Taniwha Taunt

Room13 read a book called The Terrible Taniwha of Timberditch, by Joy Cowley.  We drew our own scary Taniwha.  After doing our drawing we had to write a detailed description of our Taniwha so that another person could draw the exact same Taniwha just from reading it!

Math Strategies

Room 13 has been reflecting on the different math strategies we know to solve problems.  We are learning to use the best strategy in order to solve the problem in the most efficient way.
Can you name the strategies we have used?  Can you use any other strategy to solve the problems?

QR Code Research

Our Topic this term is Under the Sea.  To engage our curiosity we used our ipod touches to read QR codes that had been set up around the senior block.  Each QR code took us to a website with relevant information, from which we had to write down 3 facts.  It was an interesting way to learn and awesome fun!
