Olympic Sustainability

Room 13 are researching how the London 2012 organisers are attempting to provide the most sustainable Olympics in history. They are using their critical thinking skills in order to develop ideas about the facts they are finding. Ka pai!

The News

Room 13 read Kiwi Kids News at shared reading time and discuss any issues that the news items raise. Today we played Newspaper Scavenger Hunt that involves finding different types of articles in an actual newspaper. It was interesting and great fun!

Room 13 have been looking at the 'Arts' for topic this term. Their topic contract asked them to make a collage of NZ symbols. Here is an example of their work by Bella who created a wonderful masterpiece, ka pai.

Writing - 'show not tell'

 Room 13 has been working hard on our writing, trying to create a picture in the mind of the reader.  We are focusing on our audience and how we can engage and sustain their attention.
Here is one piece of writing which is a good example of our developing skills.  We worked together as a class to re-craft one persons writing.  What do you think?

The Haunted House

The clock struck midnight.  The full moon was out.  Lightning flashed across the abandoned haunted house.

I opened the old rusty gate and followed the bone dry path that was leading to the screeching dead stairs.

I started tiptoeing towards the old mansion and I tripped on a thorn bush.  I lifted my head and a broken vine covered statue blocked my way.  Around the statue all I saw were dead rats!

It started getting cold and the wind stroked down my spine.  Wolves started howling and the night sky was pitch black.

House Friday

Yellow House had a technology challenge. To make the tallest tower that could stay standing. There was lots of collaborative learning going on between Y1's through to Y6's. Ka pai.
